The field of materials science and nanotechnology has been significantly impacted by the discovery of MXenes in 2011. Since that year, there has been a huge increase in research into the synthesis, characterization and applications of two-dimensional (2D) carbides and nitrides.
The general formula for MXenes is Mn+1XnTx, where M is an early transition metal, X is carbon or nitrogen, n ranges from 1 to 4, and Tx corresponds to the surface terminating groups connected to the transition metal layer. The chemical composition as well as ordering of the metal atoms in the structure increase the possible structures to more than 100.
